Amarillo is located in the Texas Panhandle and bordered by New Mexico and Oklahoma, and was established in 1887. The name Amarillo means yellow in Spanish, so named because of the color of the soil in the channel of Amarillo Creek. In the early days, most of the houses were painted yellow. From families to senior travelers, Amarillo has an activity for the outdoor enthusiast, the arts connoisseur and the western history buff. Attractions include Palo Duro Canyon State Park, with 18,000 acres, one of the nation's largest canyons.
